Save Peterhead Prison Campaign Launched
Admiralty Gateway Charitable Trust has launched the Save Peterhead Prison campaign, an urgent public fundraising appeal to help secure the long-term future of one of Scotland’s most important historic prison sites.
The campaign, now live on JustGiving, aims to raise vital funds to help the charity bridge a short-term funding gap, enabling the completion of a long-term agreement that will secure Peterhead Prison for future generations.
Peterhead Prison has stood at the heart of the Northeast since 1888 and remains a nationally significant site of Scottish penal heritage. In recent years, the charity has worked to find a sustainable future for the prison, protecting local jobs, safeguarding the building, and ensuring it remains open to the public.
A partnership with Cove Attractions is already in place, with a clear plan agreed to stabilise and secure the site. However, prolonged legal processes required to complete the transfer of the prison have significantly increased costs and delayed progress, creating a critical funding gap that now needs to be bridged.
Funds raised through the Save Peterhead Prison campaign will go directly to Admiralty Gateway Charitable Trust and will be used to:
- Keep the prison open and operational in the short term
- Support the charity while the agreed deal is completed
- Help secure a sustainable, long-term future for the prison site
“This campaign is about protecting the future, not just preventing closure,” said Conrad Ritchie, Chairman & Trustee of Admiralty Gateway Charitable Trust
“We have a clear path forward and a committed partner, but we need urgent support to bridge the final gap and get this deal over the line. The funds raised through this campaign will allow us to complete that work and secure Peterhead Prison for generations to come.”
Over the past year, significant efforts have already been made to keep the prison open, including substantial financial support and hands-on operational assistance. The charity now says public support is crucial to ensure that progress already made is not lost.
If Peterhead Prison were forced to close, the impact would be felt well beyond the site itself, affecting local employment, tourism, and the preservation of a nationally important historic asset.
“Peterhead Prison matters to this community and to Scotland’s shared history. This campaign gives people a chance to play a direct role in securing its future, at a moment when their support can make a real and lasting difference.” added Ritchie
The charity is encouraging members of the public, local businesses, and supporters of heritage to donate, share the campaign, or visit the prison to show their support.
