Peterhead Prison Museum Marks Historic Anniversary

On 14th August 1888, HMP Peterhead first opened its gates, beginning an era that would earn it the reputation as Scotland’s Toughest Jail. Today, as visitors step through its imposing granite walls, they follow in the footsteps of the officers who, for over a century, kept control of some of the country’s most notorious inmates.

Built With a Brutal Purpose
HMP Peterhead was Scotland’s first and only ‘Convict Prison’. Here, incarceration was paired with relentless hard labour. Many inmates were sent to work on the breakwater project, a massive construction designed to protect the coastline.
From Lock-Up to Landmark
After 125 years in operation, the prison was decommissioned in 2013, closing a chapter of Scotland’s penal history. Just three years later, in 2016, the prison reopened as a tourist attraction. Today, it welcomes thousands of visitors each year, offering the chance to step back in time on a Self-Guided or Guided Tour led by a former Prison Officer, bringing the prison’s captivating and dark past vividly to life.
